2013 Garbage & Recycling Changes

updated: Thursday, May 16, 2013

The new program will start on Tuesday October 1, 2013.

On May 6, 2013 the City Council approved contracts with Waste Management for garbage and recycling collection and Advanced Disposal for yard and organic waste collection.

Below are highlights of the changes:

Garbage Program

  • A new extra small (20-gallon) cart will be offered.
  • Your collection day will NOT change.
  • New compressed natural gas trucks will be used to collect garbage.
  • Waste Management will continue collecting your garbage.
  • Walk-up service and bulky item collection will still be offered.
  • Extra Refuse Stickers will be called Extra Garbage Stickers, the price remains at $2/sticker.

Recycling Program

  • Single-sort recycling will replace the current dual-sort system.
  • Residents will receive a large (90-gallon) recycling cart for no cost.
  • Residents can keep their 18-gallon recycling bins or bring them to a designated drop-off site.
  • New compressed natural gas trucks will be used to collect recycling.
  • Waste Management will replace Eureka as the hauler.
  • Collection will be every-other-week.
  • Your collection day will NOT change.
  • Additional plastics and metals will be collected.
  • Textiles will no longer be collected (this was exclusive to Eureka).
  • Walk-up service will still be offered.

Yard Waste Program

  • The current yard waste program will NOT change - the only change will be the option to add organic waste collection (see below).
  • Advanced Disposal replaces Waste Management as the hauler.

Organic Waste Program

  • Residents may voluntarily sign-up for organic waste collection.
  • Residents who sign-up will receive a large (90-gallon) cart, compostable bags, and an information packet.
  • Organic waste will be collected with yard waste (co-collection).
  • Residents must bag their organic waste using certified compostable bags (City will provide some at no cost).
  • The program will cost $10/quarter and will be included on your utility bill.
  • Collection will be weekly along with your garbage.

What would stay the same?

  • Weekly collection using city-owned carts
  • Existing service levels between 30 and 540 gallons would still be available
  • Extra Refuse (Garbage) Stickers still required for extra bagged household garbage

What’s Next?

  • A comprehensive public involvement plan was created to inform and educate residents about the changes.
  • Several open houses will be planned over the summer months.
  • Residents will be able to sign-up for organic waste collection.
  • Stay tuned - more information will be posted on the website, city newsletters, social media, cable TV, and utility billing notices.
