Friends of the Arts
Friends of the Arts is a non-profit community arts organization dedicated to supporting, promoting, and enhancing the arts in St. Louis Park. FOTA connects people and organizations around the arts, shares arts-related information and resources, and coordinates community arts programs.

Bus service
Metro Transit buses serve St. Louis Park year-round and express buses to the University of Minnesota run during the academic year. Bus schedules are usually available at city hall and the library.

Central Clinic
Infants, pre-schoolers and youth in grades K-12 can receive free medical care on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons at the Central Clinic, located in room 228 of Central Community Center. Volunteer doctors from Park Nicollet Health Services provide treatment for illness and injuries, well baby checkups, shots and preventive care. The clinic is sponsored by Park Nicollet Health Services and the St. Louis Park Public Schools.

Children First Initiative
Children First is a local initiative that focuses on building the 40 "assets" or character building attributes that kids need to become healthy, productive and successful adults. This community partnership urges everyone to take positive steps to strengthen families and create a more caring community for children and teens.

Classes For Adults
Community Education offers cooking, art, music, home care, hobbies, pet care, personal finance, dance, fitness, sports, health and wellness, languages, computers, video production, and parenting.

Free programs are available to help adults who want to improve math or reading skills, or earn a high school diploma or GED high school equivalent certificate.

Community Education offers classes in several locations for immigrants who want to learn English.

Community Action Partnership
Community Action Partnership of Suburban Hennepin aims to help low-income people move out of poverty into self-sufficiency. It offers budget counseling to help prevent foreclosure. Staff can also advise senior citizens who are "house rich" but "cash poor" about reverse mortgages.

The organization also offers homeowners and renters emergency help paying portions of heating or furnace repair bills if the household meets income guidelines.

Community Band
The St. Louis Park Community Concert Band performs year-round and meets on Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at St. Louis Park High School. The community band will perform at 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 31 at the amphitheater in Wolfe Park, 3700 Monterey Drive, St. Louis Park.

County Extension Service
Hennepin County's Extension Service provides access to master gardeners who can answer questions about gardening, yard care, soil testing, composting, insects, and animal predation. The extension office can also answer cooking, laundry and consumer questions. There is no charge for this service. This service may be reduced due to funding cutbacks.

Domestic Violence
The St. Louis Park Police Department takes calls about domestic violence seriously. A few days after the initial call, the department will follow-up with the victim to go over a safety plan, and, if warranted, take photos to document the abuse.

Victims may also contact Cornerstone, an organization that provides comprehensive support services to women, men and children who are the victims of domestic violence. Services include emergency safe housing, transitional housing, legal services, counseling and support for children and teens who have witnessed family violence. If the abuser is not arrested at the time of the incident, you can request that a criminal complaint be filed against the abuser. You also have the right to go to court to obtain a restraining order against the abuser. The order for protection can:

  • Restrain the abuser from additional abusive acts
  • Direct the abuser to leave your home
  • Stop the abuser from entering your home, school or workplace
  • Award you custody or visitation of children
  • Direct the abuser to pay support and, possibly, child support.

First-Time homebuyer loans available
If you’re in the market for your first home, you may be eligible for a 30-year mortgage at one percent below the market interest rate. To qualify you must meet income guidelines that range from $61,000 (1 - 4 people) to $80,700 (8-person household). The purchase price may not exceed $261,900. Down payment requirements range from 0 to 5 percent. Down payment and closing cost assistance is also available to eligible buyers. Historical Society & Depot
The St. Louis Park Historical Society collects, preserves and shares knowledge about St. Louis Park's history. Its collection of historical documents is housed in the Depot in Jorvig Park, 37th and Brunswick. The Depot, which was built by the Milwaukee Road railroad in 1887, is open to visitors from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays throughout the summer or by appointment.

Volunteers staff a desk at Lenox Community Center several days each week. Visitors can drop by during the hours listed below or call (952) 924-2550 and leave a message which will be returned by a Historical Society volunteer. Lenox is located at 6715 Minnetonka Boulevard.

Tenants can call the HOME Line to get information on leases, getting security deposits back, dealing with repair problems or eviction, or other renter-related questions.

Homebound Library Service
The Hennepin County Library Homebound Service delivers books, tapes and other library materials to homebound residents of suburban Hennepin County. This is a free service to individuals who are confined to their home due to illness, physical handicap, disability, weather or lack of transportation.

Learning Disabilities Association of Minnesota
LDA of Minnesota is a nonprofit agency serving children and adults with ADHD, learning disabilities, and other learning difficulties, their families, and the professionals who serve them. LDA offers education, workshops, support groups, assessments, tutoring, referrals, transition coaching, and free phone consultations.

Library
The St. Louis Park Public Library has 50,000 books in its collection as well as an extensive magazine collection, books on tape, large print books, CD's, DVD's, and videotapes. The library also offers an on-line catalog system, Internet access, word processing stations, reference and information services, story time, a summer children's program, and author lectures. It also offers a selection of Russian and Spanish print and audiovisual materials. The library is located at 3240 Library Lane (one block east of Louisiana Avenue).

St. Louis Park Friends of the Library is a volunteer group that helps with book sales, prepares displays, and repairs books and puppets.

Meadowbrook Collaborative
The Meadowbrook Collaborative is a partnership among the City of St. Louis Park, St. Louis Park School District, Park Nicollet Health Services and the Ridgedale Branch YMCA. The collaborative works with the Meadowbrook property owner and residents to offer services and activities aimed at ensuring that residents' health, education and safety needs are met.

Mediation Services
North Hennepin Mediation offers an alternative method for resolving disputes with neighbors, family members, businesses, employers, employees, landlords, tenants or juveniles. Both sides meet with a trained mediator to discuss a mutually acceptable solution. If the parties reach a decision, the mediator writes up their agreement. The mediator is not a judge and does not impose a solution: the parties decide on the actual agreement. Because the City of St. Louis Park is a supporting member of the program, there is no fee for this service.

Musical Instruments
Parents should notify their child's music teacher if their child wants to participate in a school music program but cannot afford an instrument. If you have a musical instrument you don't use, consider donating it. The St. Louis Park Community Band collects instruments to lend to kids who can't afford to rent one. Instruments must be playable or need only minor repairs.

NORC (Nurturing Our Retired Citizens)
The vision of the St. Louis Park NORC project is to create an environment that nurtures healthy aging and inspires residents of all ages to work toward this goal. The mission is to enable older adults to stay in their homes and community for as long as they can with the support they need to be healthy, safe and engaged citizens. Parenting Education
Early Childhood Family Education: Classes for families with children from birth to kindergarten age are offered on a weekly basis. The program provides parents an opportunity to share concerns and get suggestions for handling everyday problems such as anger or resistance to bedtime.

Park Call-In
If you live alone and health is a concern, the Park Call-In Program can help monitor your safety. Call-In participants phone a special number each morning to report that they are all right. If no call is received, someone checks on the resident.

Project SOAR offers classes, social activities and referral to support groups for adults with disabilities who live in the western suburbs. SOAR can also help obtain mobility aides, note-takers, and interpreters for individuals taking a Community Education class.

The St. Louis Park Community Foundation pools donations and bequests into a source for grants aimed at funding community events and programs that enhance the quality of life in St. Louis Park. Grant focus areas include: arts and culture, environmental protection and beautification, health, housing, human services, recreation and youth development. STEP
STEP (St. Louis Park Emergency Program) offers services to residents who are experiencing a crisis. Emergency services include transportation, food shelf, clothing closet and financial assistance for rent, mortgage or utilities. Social workers are available to help with problem solving, advocacy and finding additional resources. Seasonal emergency services - a school supply and holiday food/toy program - are also offered. For a small fee, individuals over age 60 or with disabilities can get help with raking leaves, cleaning gutters, snow shoveling, housekeeping and other simple projects. STEP also offers rides to medical and dental appointments for residents over age 60 or persons with disabilities.

Teens Alone
Teens Alone is a free and confidential crisis and counseling service for St. Louis Park junior and senior high students and their families. Counselors help youth who are having problems process difficult choices and understand the consequences of running away from home. Counselors also work with families on improving communication skills, setting boundaries and finding hope.

A percentage of St. Louis Park residents do not receive the St. Louis Park SunSailor newspaper, containing the city's official legal notices and other news coverage related to the city government. If you do not currently receive the free distribution SunSailor and would like to subscribe, contact the paper's circulation department at (952) 392-6835. YES Kids
YES Kids is a non profit, community outreach program for youth in grades 4 through 12. Located at 7600 Highway 7, it provides free after-school programs, special Friday night programs, and a youth center for kids. Periodically, they take kids on special outings such as sporting events, concerts, etc.
