Hydrant flushing - revised date: April 20
The Utility Department will be doing our annual hydrant flushing will between April 20 thru 24. Any questions please call (952) 924-2558.

Water main flushing may temporarily discolor water
City crews will be flushing water mains throughout St. Louis Park to break loose normal mineral build-up inside underground mains. To minimize inconvenience to residents, work will occur from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
“Crews flush water mains by opening fire hydrants, so don’t be alarmed if you see water gushing from hydrants while a city truck is nearby,” explained Utilities Superintendent Scott Anderson. “We’re just flushing the mains.”
While the final result is improved water color and taste, this housekeeping procedure can temporarily discolor water.
“When we flush the mains, we increase the flow to create a scouring action inside the water mains,” Anderson said. “That breaks loose any mineral build-up and iron sediment from the water main.
Unfortunately, loose iron particles can give water a yellow or orange color. Iron naturally occurs in groundwater, and it isn’t harmful to your health; however, rusty colored water doesn’t look very attractive and it can stain clothes during washing.”
To avoid any discolored water resulting from water main cleaning, Anderson recommends you take these precautions:

- Turn your water softener off (or set it to “bypass”) for the week.

- During this week, don’t do laundry at night or without first checking to see if your water is rust-colored. You can check water by running the tap: If it’s rust-colored, don’t run your washing machine until you’ve cleared the water. To clear your water, simply run the tap until it runs clear again.

- Each morning during this week, run the cold water tap to flush your household system of any discolored water sitting in the pipes. If tap water becomes discolored during the day, run the cold water tap until the water clears again.

These precautions need be taken only during the week when crews are flushing mains. And while it’s a good idea to take these precautions, you may not experience any discolored water during this week.
“You’re only likely to get discolored water if you happen to be running your water at the same time that crews are flushing the mains in your neighborhood,” he said. “If you’re not using water at night when crews flush the mains, the water simply passes through the mains rather than coming into your home’s pipes.”
If your laundry is stained by the water during this week, keep the laundered items wet and call the Utility Division at (952) 924-2558. City crews will bring you a chemical that removes these stains.
