Environment

Environmental Stewardship

St. Louis Park is committed to being a leader in environmental stewardship. We will increase environmental consciousness and responsibility in all areas of city business.

Focus areas for this strategic direction:

- Expanding energy efficiencies in the city's operations.

- Educating staff and the public on environmental consciousness, stewardship and best practices.

- Working in areas such as the rehab loan program, development projects, permits, etc., encourage green building design, creation of open spaces, and environmental innovations.

- Preserving, enhancing and providing good stewardship of our parks.

- Investigating the need and purpose for an energy/environmental commission.

Vision in Action - Green Business awards recognize local businesses

The St. Louis Park Green Business Program promotes and recognizes local businesses that make environmentally friendly choices in managing their resources, such as recycling waste, reducing packaging, or reuse of materials. This program is sponsored by the City of St. Louis Park and Waste Management and was initiated by a grant from Keep America Beautiful in 2006.

Current Green Businesses include: Brent's Signs, Commercial Furniture, Flextech, Grossman Design, Hoigaard's, Linsk Flowers, Nordic Ware, Phoenix Process Consultants and Torah Academy.

Awards are given at the first December City Council meeting to businesses that have applied and met the environmental criteria. Winners will be announced in the SunSailor, on the city website and on local community television. We encourage you to support these Green Businesses!

Vision in Action - City clean-up days help preserve our environment

Two times each year, the city holds a clean-up day for unwanted household items and electronics. At no charge, St. Louis Park residents may bring items such as furniture, bikes, carpet, tires, left-over remodeling supplies, appliances, and equipment such as lawn mowers and snow blowers.

Electronics such as computer monitors, computer towers and peripheries, televisions, DVD players, VCRs, radios, small appliances, fax machines and printers, are also accepted at the site for a fee.

Such events underscore the city’s commitment to keeping the environment clean by discouraging illegal dumping and raising community awareness of this issue.

The next clean-up day is scheduled for Saturday, June 14th, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the St. Louis Park Municipal Service Center, 7305 Oxford Street.

Vision in Action - Recycling in the parks

As a steward of its environment, the City of St. Louis Park promotes recycling in many of its higher-volume parks. To encourage this practice and reduce the amount of trash thrown into the recycling containers, the city is now using a yellow barrel with a flat top in these locations. It is clearly marked and identifiable as a recycling container.

Parks included in this recycling project include:

Aquila, Bass Lake, Carson, Dakota, Fern Hill, Freedom, Keystone, Louisiana Oaks, Northside, Oak Hill, Shelard, Skippy, Twin Lakes, Walker, Westwood Nature Center, and Wolfe Park.

Plastic bottles and aluminum cans will be collected in the yellow recycling containers.  The city will continue to educate residents about these locations by posting signs, and sending information to sports leagues, neighborhoods, community organizations, in city publications, on the city website, and in the SunSailor.
