According to the 2009 Recycling Recovery Rate Study for St. Louis Park, almost half (42.1%) of the materials in residential garbage carts consists of organic materials (food scraps and non-recyclable paper products).  Putting food scraps into a compost bin saves space in your garbage cart - it can also save you money.  Having less trash means you can switch to a smaller garbage cart and the money you save by using your own finished compost instead of buying bagged compost can be significant.
