Domestic Violence
updated: Wednesday, March 21, 2012The St. Louis Park Police Department takes calls about domestic violence seriously. A few days after the initial call, the department will follow-up with the victim to go over a safety plan, and, if warranted, take photos to document the abuse.
Victims may also contact Cornerstone, an organization that provides comprehensive support services to women, men and children who are the victims of domestic violence. Services include emergency safe housing, transitional housing, legal services, counseling and support for children and teens who have witnessed family violence. For more information, contact Cornerstone at:
- 952/884-0376 (office)
- 952/884-0330 (24 hour crisis line)
If the abuser is not arrested at the time of the incident, you can request that a criminal complaint be filed against the abuser. You also have the right to go to court to obtain a restraining order against the abuser. The order for protection can:
- Restrain the abuser from additional abusive acts
- Direct the abuser to leave your home
- Stop the abuser from entering your home, school or workplace
- Award you custody or visitation of children
- Direct the abuser to pay support and, possibly, child support.
For more information about restraining orders, call (612) 348-5073.
