Fire Station Plans Approved

updated: Thursday, December 29, 2011

The St. Louis Park City Council approved plans to build two new and expanded fire stations to replace the two existing fire stations on March 7, 2011. Both stations will be rebuilt in about the same location as the existing stations. Construction of both stations is planned to begin in May 2011 and will last approximate 12 months.

Fire Station No. 2 will remain open while the new building is constructed next to it. Fire Station No. 1 will be demolished in April 2011, and operations will temporarily move to the Municipal Services Building during construction. The Fire Department does not expect any disruptions to fire or emergency medical services.

The new Fire Station No. 1 building will be 30,695 square feet in area and two stories tall. The building will include Fire Department administration offices, station administration, training room, kitchen/dayroom, fitness room, locker rooms, hose tower, sleeping quarters, and eight apparatus bays of varying depths.

The new Fire Station No. 2 will be 16,760 square feet in area and one-story tall. The building will include station administration, fitness room, locker rooms, kitchen/dayroom, sleeping quarters, and four apparatus bays.

Both buildings incorporate energy efficient and environmentally sound design in accordance with the St. Louis Park’s Green Building Policy. The design includes use of passive solar energy and day-lighting; regionally-sourced, recycled, and low VOC emission materials; high efficiency boilers and chillers; and best management practices for storm water management.

Both of the current fire stations were constructed in the 1960s. The buildings do not meet accessibility rules for public buildings and they do not accommodate the current multi-gender Fire Department staffing. Other concerns relate to deteriorating structural elements, the aging mechanical systems, limited ventilation, lack of apparatus storage space, and insufficient meeting space to host all firefighters simultaneously for meetings and training.
