St. Louis Park Reserve Program

The St. Louis Park Police Reserve unit is made up of 15-25 volunteers who range in age from 20 to over 60. Created in 1975, they donate around 1,000 hours of volunteer service to the City of St. Louis Park every year. Reserves work night patrols and at various City events, including 4th of July festival, National Night Out, school carnivals, D.A.R.E. graduations and more.

Memberships
Minimum Requirements are:

  • All members must be at least 20 years of age and be a US Citizen.
  • Applicants must pass a criminal records check and not have any criminal convictions.
  • Have a Valid Drivers License and a good driving record.
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must be in good physical condition.

Members are required to complete the reserve officer's training through the St. Louis Park Police Dept. Once they have gone through the training, new members are placed on probation for one year. Reserves are not licensed officers and are not authorized to carry firearms. We require a minimum of 10 hours a month per reserve officer and also attend monthly meetings.

Duties

  • Patrol: Reserves patrol through out the week primarily on Friday and Saturday nights, assisting officers on various calls. They work in pairs and respond to calls that do not require a licensed officer or, if directed, assist police officers on other calls.
  • 4th of July Reserves handle traffic control, medical assistance, and security for the 4th of July celebration.
  • School Events Reserves work at local athletics events, providing emergency first aid and traffic control. They also assist in the school carnivals and McGruff the Crime Dog. They also participate at our annual Safety Camp.
  • Emergency Callouts One of the most important roles of the reserves is to be available for emergencies on short notice. Reserves have been called upon to assist in: major fires, flooding, lost and missing children & adults, crime scene protection, power outages, fatal accidents, hostage situations, and severe storms.
