Mechanical Permits

updated: Monday, January 09, 2012

Requirements
In St. Louis Park, mechanical permits are required whenever an owner or the owner's agent intends to build, alter, repair, move, or demolish a fuel-burning appliance or system. This includes replacing a furnace, boiler or furnace/air conditioner combination, direct vent fireplace, gas piping, gas stove, clothes dryer or other mechanical work. Permits are necessary for work on residential, commercial and industrial properties.

The City of St. Louis Park enforces the 2009 Minnesota State Mechanical and Fuel Gas Codes based on the 2006 International Mechanical and Fuel Gas Codes with amendments

A mechanical permit is not required when work is limited to

  • Installing portable heating, cooking or clothes drying appliances
  • Replacing a minor part that does not alter the third party listing and equipment approval or make the equipment unsafe
  • Installing portable heating appliances, portable ventilation appliances or portable cooling units.

Emergency Repairs If equipment replacements and repairs must be performed in an emergency situation, the permit application must be submitted to the City of St. Louis Park on the next business day.
