Electronic Media Recycling
updated: Tuesday, January 31, 2012Hennepin County has added media recycling to the household electronics recycling program at the county’s drop-off facilities. Please remove paper boxes, inserts and sleeves and place in your paper recycling. Cracked and broken items are accepted.
Materials accepted include:
- Audio cassettes
- Blu-Ray™ discs
- Camcorder tapes
- Compact Discs (CDs)
- Computer and floppy disks
- DVDs
- Flash drives
- Game cartridges and discs
- Ink jet and laser toner cartridges*
- Jewel and plastic cases
- SD™ cards
- VHS tapes
- Video tapes and cassettes
- Vinyl records
*Toner and ink cartridge refill bottles are not accepted.
Hennepin County is the first local option to accept such a wide variety of electronic media for recycling. In the first month of the program, 700 pounds of media have been collected for recycling at the drop-off facilities. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that every month approximately 100,000 pounds of CDs become obsolete in the United States and more than 5.5 million boxes of software are discarded each year.
