Water Conservation
Here's how to conserve water and lower your water bills
Sprinkle lawns early in the morning or in the evening. Don't sprinkle lawns from noon to 6 p.m. when as much as 75 percent of the water evaporates. Remember that the sprinkling ordinance does not allow sprinkling between noon and 6:00 p.m. on every day of the week. Before noon and after 6:00 p.m., the city follows and odd even system (sprinkle on even days if your address is even-numbered). Water trees and gardens with a hose or soaker hose rather than a sprinkler. Use mulch around trees, shrubs and flowers to retain soil moisture. Sweep driveways and sidewalks with a broom rather than hosing them down. Repair leaky taps and toilets. A dripping faucet can waste 15 to 20 gallons of water a day.
Please help us avoid a water shortage. During a typical hot summer day, St. Louis Park rises to 12 million to 14 million gallons each day, as compared to 5 million to 6 million gallons each day in winter.
Water
Mission
The St. Louis Park Water Utilities mission is to provide an uninterrupted supply of safe, high quality water to our customers. We also strive to be an integral part of the community-ready to educate children and adults about drinking water and the system delivering it. In addition to pumping, treating and delivering water to your home, our Minnesota Department of Health certified water treatment operators provide educational seminars to schools and others groups about the city’s water system and water quality issues.

Drinking Water System
Although many people don't know it, residents of American cities enjoy the best drinking water in the world. This is because the water we drink is a manufactured product, improved by treatment processes. St. Louis Park water is disinfected to eliminate microorganisms. Fluoride is added to enhance children's dental protection. The nuisance minerals iron and manganese are removed from the water by aeration and filtration. Radium is removed through chemical injection and filtration. Organic contaminates are removed from two wells by granular activated carbon filtration. The water treatment operators check the treatment system every day to ensure water quality standards are met.

Stormwater
Stormwater becomes polluted when it picks up things like soil, grass clippings, leaves, pesticides, motor oil, and salt, and flushes them into storm drains and eventually into the Mississippi River.
