Compost Your Holiday Tree

updated: Monday, April 02, 2012

Waste Management collects holiday trees at no cost during the first two weeks in January.  Residents are asked to set their holiday tree at the curb or alley on their regular collection day between Jan. 2 and Jan. 13, 2012. The trees will be sent to the compost site rather than the incinerator during this time. Trees will still be collected after these 2 weeks; however there will be a collection charge of $15 (plus taxes) starting January 16.

Collection Tips

  • Before you set your tree out on the curb, be sure to “undress” your tree: remove lights, tinsel, and decorations.
  • Trees over 6 feet must be cut shorter than 6 feet to fit into the trucks.
  • Wait until the day before, or the day of, your collection to set out your tree – otherwise, trees can get stuck in the snow, and that makes it difficult for tree collectors to pry them loose.
  • Trees must be out by 7:00 a.m. on collection day to ensure collection.
  • Wreaths and garland cannot be composted unless you remove all decorations and wires - then they can be placed in a compostable yard waste bag for collection.  Otherwise, please place them in your garbage cart.
  • Flocked trees can’t be composted.  Please call Waste Management at (763) 783-5423  for more information.

Yard Waste Tips
If you would like yard waste collected during these two weeks, set it out for collection on the day of collection to prevent it from being covered in snow or getting stuck in snow or ice. Make sure it is visible, and separate from garbage and recycling. Call Waste Management at (763) 783-5423 if you only have yard waste set out for collection (with no tree), as they will not be looking for yard waste. Yard waste could be easily overlooked.
