How to Prepare Yard Waste

updated: Wednesday, April 04, 2012

What is yard waste?
Yard waste includes all garden wastes, grass clippings, leaves, weeds, soft garden materials, holiday trees, shrub and tree waste and prunings.  Wood chips can also be included.

How do I prepare yard waste for collection?

  1. Use a yard waste container. Use your own 32-gallon container.  Your container should have handles and a lid. Filled containers should weigh no more than 40 pounds so it can be lifted by a single person.  Free Yard Waste Only stickers for use on your containers can be obtained by calling Waste Management at (763) 783-5423 or the City of St. Louis Park at (952) 924-2555.  Containers do not need to be lined with a compostable bag.
  2. Use a bag.  Acceptable bags include certified compostable bags, brown paper Kraft lawn bags, or brown paper grocery bags.
  3. Bundle yard waste.  Twigs and small branches will be collected at no extra charge as long as the branches are less than four inches in diameter and less than four feet long. Branches and twigs must be placed in a brown paper bag or tied into bundles; if they are piled loosely on the ground, they will not be collected.

When is yard waste collected?
Yard waste is collected on your regular collection day (same as garbage & recycling) during the growing season.  Please have yard waste out by 7am to ensure collection.

What NOT to do with yard waste

  • Do not place Extra Refuse Stickers on bags of yard waste.
  • Do not include sod, dirt, bricks, flower pots, garden implements or any household garbage in the same bag with yard waste or it will not be collected.
  • You cannot set out grass clippings if you signed up for the no grass clippings option.  Call Utility Billing at (952) 924-2111 to verify your yard waste option.
  • MN Statutes §115A.931 prohibits placing yard waste in garbage and requires the use of compostable bags that meet the specifications in ASTM Standard Specification for Compostable Plastics (D6400).
