Planned Unit Development (PUD)

updated: Monday, May 14, 2012

A Planned Unit Development (PUD) is a type of development approved through a special regulatory process designed to allow flexibility in the zoning process to encourage innovative land use and development.  A PUD may include varied and compatible land uses, such as housing, recreation, office and commercial uses within one defined development.  Planned Unit developments require the approval of both a preliminary and final PUD plan.  Each application requires review by the Planning Commission and City Council.  Potential benefits of a PUD include more efficient site design, higher standards of architectural design, more efficient and effective use of streets and utilities, more usable and suitable amenities such as open space and recreational areas, and preservation of desirable site characteristics.
