City receives award for Plant the Park Project
The City of St. Louis Park, along with partners Hennepin County and Tree Trust, received the Minnesota Community Forestry Outstanding Project Award for last October’s Plant the Park project. This award is presented annually by the Minnesota Society of Arboriculture and Minnesota Shade Tree Advisory Committee (Minnesota’s Urban Forest Council) to an individual or organization that has organized and implemented an innovative and successful arboriculture project. Plant the Park was a partnership tree planting project along Minnetonka Boulevard. Through this effort, 138 trees (23 different varieties) were planted, adding a diverse, green mix to this heavily traveled corridor.
This event was part of Hennepin County’s initiative to plant trees along country streets that have minimal tree canopy, as well as part of the city’s yearly efforts to diversify our community tree canopy. Once the newly-planted trees mature, the tree canopy will provide countless benefits, including improved air and water quality, reduced stormwater runoff, savings in heating and cooling, enhanced livability and increased property values.
