City congratulated for bronze SolSmart designation
St. Louis Park Chief Building Official Dave Skallet and Environment and Sustainability Intern Lauren Michaels attended the 2019 Annual Minnesota SolSmart Solar Permitting Best Practices Workshop last month in Maplewood. The event brought together leading solar communities in Minnesota for a solar permitting training, panel discussion and SolSmart designation ceremony. In attendance by webinar and in person were local solar installers, several prospective SolSmart communities and dozens of representatives from designated communities and communities working toward designation throughout Minnesota.
The day began with a ceremony congratulating designated communities for their bold actions to make installing solar faster, easier and more affordable. All designees have streamlined the solar permitting process with a turnaround time of less than 10 days and many established rooftop PV solar as a by-right accessory use in all zoning districts.
The City of St. Louis Park received the bronze SolSmart designation in December 2018 by revising the solar permitting process and creating a residential solar Photovoltaic (PV) system permit checklist. Information has also been added to permits page of the website that supports solar permitting based on recommendations from technical advisors from the SolSmart program.
