fire station 2 solar panelsThe city is expected to receive a $8,500 cashback rebate for the solar installation project at Fire Station 2, which was completed as part of the Made in Minnesota (MiM) Solar Incentive Program. The rebate is based on an annual energy production of roughly 43,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) in 2018 — about 29 percent of the building’s total electrical consumption. The city will continue to receive this rebate annually for the remainder of the contract.

The MiM Solar Incentive Program provides financial benefits to energy customers who choose to install solar on their home or business. From 2014 - 2017, the program has approved support for nearly 1,400 projects in more than 50 counties across Minnesota, accounting for more than 20 megawatts of new capacity after all projects are installed. The program was open to customers of investor-owned electric utilities (Xcel Energy, Minnesota Power and Otter Tail Power).

The MiM Solar Incentive Program was repealed during the 2017 legislative session, meaning no further applications will be accepted for the program.

The installation of the solar panels at Fire Station 2, as well as at the Municipal Service Center, were part of the Climate Action Plan's goals to increase renewable energy production.
