In December 2016, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) approved a milestone by allowing the Southwest Light Rail Transit (SWLRT) project’s entry into “engineering.” This means the federal government has authorized project staff to finalize designs in preparation for the start of construction in 2017. Earlier in 2016, the FTA cleared SWLRT’s environmental review. Bid documents for heavy construction are now being prepared. Construction will take place from 2017 to 2020 and the line will be open for riders in 2021. When the 14.5-mile line opens in 2021 as the METRO Green Line Extension, it will provide access to about 200,000 jobs. For more information visit bit.ly/SWLRTUpdate.
