Message from the Chief

updated: Friday, March 17, 2017

The St. Louis Park Police Department has been serving the community since 1934. Following the retirement of the previous police chief at the end of 2016, an extensive search for a new police chief was undertaken. During that time, Lt. Chad Kraayenbrink has been serving as interim police chief. On March 13, Lt. Mike Harcey was selected as the next police chief. In accordance with the City Charter, the city council will consider consent of the appointment of the police chief at its Monday, March 20, meeting. If consent is granted, Lt. Harcey will be sworn in as police chief at the meeting and will assume his official duties March 21, 2017.

“It has been my honor to serve the citizens of St. Louis Park alongside the exceptional officers, civilian staff and volunteers that I have worked with for the last 25 years,” said Lt. Harcey. “I am humbled to have been selected as the next chief of police and I look forward to working in partnership with the community to provide the highest quality police services.”

The police department believes in the Community Oriented Policing (COP) philosophy and relies on the trust and partnership of residents in keeping St. Louis Park a safe place to live, work and visit.

The police department handles tens of thousands of requests for service each year with the goal of being as transparent as possible while providing information in a format that is easy to understand.
